What is a Board-Certified Specialist?

Board-certified veterinary specialists have completed a bachelor of science degree, 4 years of veterinary medical school earning a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), a minimum of a one year internship or equivalent training, and 2-4 years of intensive residency training.

Then, to become a "Board Certified Specialist" (i.e., "Diplomate") in a veterinary specialty the veterinarian must finally pass a rigorous series of examinations.

Dr. Dale spent ten years working as a veterinary technician while completing her undergraduate studies. Five of those years were spent working here at the Bay Area Veterinary Emergency Clinic.

In veterinary school, Dr. Dale took extra courses in nutrition and emergency medicine, covering both small animal and equine topics. During veterinary school she also completed a master's degree in comparative pathology, studying the interactions of bacteria and respiratory epithelium as they relate to the progression of cystic fibrosis. Dr. Dale was invited to join Phi Zeta, the veterinary honor society, and received an award for nutrition.

During veterinary school Dr. Dale rescued a pug. The pug is named Faith and has helped Dr. Dale see how wonderful pugs are. Because of this, Dr. Dale made deals with other students and called dibs to have as many smoosh-faced patients as possible. Dr. Dale gets very excited when she has the opportunity to help a pug or its relatives (French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Brussels Griffons....).

After graduating from veterinary school, Dr. Dale spent one year working at a small animal day practice in Arizona. Finding the climate to be too hot, and wanting to practice emergency medicine, Dr. Dale returned to BAVS to work as an emergency doctor. In veterinary school, she worked in the Immunology Laboratory at K-Sate.  She again ran various electrophoresis equipment, performed Coomb's and ANA testing.

After graduating from veterinary school, Dr. McKee first practiced in a very busy, multi-doctor practice outside of Chicago.  It was "Trial by Fire" for a new graduate.  There the doctors rotated Emergency duty.  Then she practiced again in a multi-doctor practice in a Detroit suburb.  She worked with the Michigan Anti-Cruelty Society on animal abuse cases.  She also helps educate the employees of a pet store chain regarding nutrition and establishing basic puppy/kitten wellness programs.

Dr. McKee has mostly done independent contract work since moving to the Bay Area in the autumn of 1996. This allowed flexibility with her schedule to enjoy the beauty of California.  However, she would focus on being permanent-part-time for the most part in order to establish rapport with the clients and patients, and also to have continuity with medical cases.

Her special interests in veterinary medicine include emergency medicine, soft tissue surgery, and pocket pet medicine.

Dr.McKee's interests outside of work include: hiking, terriers, cross country skiing, cooking/baking, nature photography, spending time friends, her 3 dogs and cat, and playing 3 musical instruments.
