What is a
Board-Certified Specialist?
Board-certified veterinary specialists
have completed a bachelor of science degree, 4 years of veterinary medical
school earning a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), a minimum of a
one year internship or equivalent training, and 2-4 years of intensive residency
training.
Then, to become a "Board Certified
Specialist" (i.e., "Diplomate") in a veterinary specialty the veterinarian must
finally pass a rigorous series of examinations.

Practice Limited to Internal Medicine
Dr. Sox is a native Californian, born and raised in the Sacramento
area. She graduated from the University of California, Davis where
she completed a Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Science. In 2005,
she graduated from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine with a
doctorate degree in veterinary medicine.
Dr. Sox spent a year as a rotating intern at the Veterinary
Specialty Hospital in San Diego. She completed her small animal
internal medicine residency at Cornell University. During her
residency she performed research to investigate new ways of
monitoring kidney function in feline patients.
Dr. Sox enjoys all areas of internal medicine and the challenges of
diagnosing and managing complex disease processes. Having adopted a
Yorkie with a portosystemic shunt during her internship, she has a
particular interest in diagnosis and management of dogs born with
this problem. She enjoys performing advanced non-invasive diagnostic
procedures, such as endoscopy. Above all else, she loves her daily
interactions with patients and their owners.
Dr. Sox is very excited to leave the cold New York winters behind
and to be near her family again in Northern California. Outside of
work, Dr. Sox likes to spend time with her cat and two dogs. She
also loves doing crossword puzzles with her dad, swimming, dancing,
shopping and being silly. As a devoted humanitarian and animal
advocate, Dr. Sox has spent many years providing volunteer services
for organizations that help animals in need and pets belonging to
the homeless.

Oncology Resident
Special interest in mast cell tumor biology and management
Born in Houston, Texas, Dr. Roof lived in The Woodlands until just
before her 8th birthday when she moved to Flower Mound, Texas, or
"the country" as she called it then. Since the neighbors had
buffalo, she knew she had to have a horse. For her 8th birthday, she
received riding lessons and her passion for riding progressed from
there. She soon met veterinarians coming to treat the horses and
this is the only career she has ever wanted to pursue.
All during this time, however, Dr. Roof’s passion was horses and she
started "Eventing" when she was 10 with her first horse. She
continued competing all over the US through her undergrad years.
This passion helped prepare her for her next career. It was hard
work, dedication, disappointments, and successes rolled into one.
Her trainers taught her to think of the horse’s best interest first,
then her wants and desires.
Whenever possible, she was helping the vets with routine care around
the barn and watching various treatments for colics and various
injuries, some of which were on her own horses. When she was old
enough, she started volunteering at their clinics, going on farm
calls, and finally working with a small animal vet, Glynis Roth, DVM,
during her summers in high school and undergrad. During her horse
shows, Erin met and became friends an oncologist who inspired her to
look into this field and the rest is history.
Dr. Roof enjoys giving hope to animals that have been diagnosed with
cancer. Motivated by owner’s dedication to their four-legged family
members has given her the strength to provide support to cancer
patients and make a difference in their lives.

Staff Intern
Dr. Maitz was born on the island of Puerto Rico, but was raised
for most of his life in suburban St. Louis. Charlie swam and played
both hockey and water polo for St. Louis University High School,
while also participating for the physics bowl. Dr. Maitz completed
his undergraduate studies at the University of Missouri, where he
earned a B.S. in biology and a minor in chemistry, while being an
active member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity and serving a stint as
president of the Tiger Water Polo club. He then spent a six-month
vacation in San Diego where he spent his remaining money, but acted
as an intern for the Navy Marine Mammal Program. After the program,
Dr. Maitz, in the spirit of a true tiger, returned to the University
of Missouri to complete his veterinary training. During his
veterinary schooling, Dr. Maitz developed an appreciation for
radiology, diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy, and received
the American College of Radiology Senior Student Award. Dr. Maitz
has also completed a preceptorship at the National Aquarium in
Baltimore and is a graduate of the Aquavet class of 2008.
While not working, Charlie enjoys learning about fish health,
physics and auto racing and planning weddings. He probably spends
too much time with his video games, but balances it with pick up
hockey and water polo games, and wrestling with his Australian
Shepherd/Great Pyrenees, Tiegan. Further mouths that must be fed
include the three cats, Guenwhyvar, Ezekiel and Lars and an
assortment of freshwater fish.

Professional Interests: Small animal emergency medicine, small

Dr. Sattelmaier grew up in Garfield Heights, Ohio. As the legend
goes, Nick often told his mother of his aspirations to one day
become a veterinarian as a small child. While attending Trinity High
School, he played football and participated in Mock Trial. It is
rumored that he won the highly sought after best witness award. He
was also awarded Trinity High School's very first History Department
Award. While in high school Nick volunteered at a small animal and
avian practice to gain experience in the veterinary field. After
high school Nick attended John Carroll University where he played
football for two years before tearing his rotator cuff. With
football coming to an end he began to refocus his attention on
veterinary medicine and started working at a small animal emergency
and referral hospital where he gained experience in the veterinary
field. Before being accepted to The Ohio State University veterinary
program Dr. Sattelmaier also worked at another small animal
emergency clinic and a small animal private practice to gain more
experience. While attending Ohio State Nick gained an appreciation
for every aspect of veterinary medicine while trying to maintain an
active social life. Among his activities included class rep and
eventually secretary for the Ohio State SCAVMA chapter, vice
president of the emergency and critical care club and fundraiser for
Omega Tau Sigma, one of the two veterinary professional fraternities
at Ohio State.
Outside of veterinary medicine Dr. Sattelmaier enjoys spending a
great deal of time outdoors with his newly acquired Pekingese
Princess, who is a special needs canine abandoned at Ohio State and
exploring the great state of California.
